he roots,the spotted cubs had slept quietly for atime. Then one of them stirred, blinked,and sat up suddenly sniffing the dampnight air. The movement awoke theother and it, too, sat up, yawned, andstretched, then, catching the same odor,stiffened into attention, all its senses onthe alert. Presently they heard a faint, scrapingsound as of something being draggedslowly over the ground. The soundcame nearer, ceased for a few minutes,then came on again. The faint odorwhich had first caught their attentionwas growing stronger and the kittenscowered back into the farthest corner ofthe den with a whimper of fear. Nearer and nearer came the soundtill it seemed just outside the entrance.There it ceased, and a flat, blunt headappeared and slowly, very slowly, it camein, followed by foot after foot of scaly,glistening, mottled body.
