CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER. Like iNIr. Aldrich, who played witli his hoyhood in TheStory of a Bad Boy, Mr. Warner has treated himself as asort of third person in Being a Boy, the scenes of which arelaid in a primitive jNIassachusetts conntry neighborhood.The place which stood for its portrait is Charlemont, nearthe eastern opening to the Hoosac tunnel. Here Mr. War-ner spent his boyhood, removing to the place, wlien hisfather died, from Plainfield. in the same state, where hewas born September 12, 1829. He was five years old whenhe was taken to Charlemont, and he remained there eightyears, and then removed to Cazenovia, N. Y. His guardianintended him for business life, and placed him after hisschool days as clerk in a store, but his intellectual ambitionwas strong, and against all adverse fates he secured a col-legiate education at Hamilton College, where he graduatedin 1851.
