From Hartfell looking west to the great bowl among the hills that is the Devil's Beef Tub (catching the sunlight in this picture) with Annanhead (the source of the River Annan) to the right of the picture above the Beef Tub. The lush green valley of the river Annan (Annandale) can be seen in the left foreground. The A701 road climbs from left to right up the ridge beyond this valley - from Moffat to Annanhead, Tweedsmuir and, eventually, Edinburgh.

Annandale (Gaelic: Strath Annan) is a strath in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, named after the River Annan. It runs north-south through the Southern Uplands from Annanhead (north of Moffat) to Annan on the Solway Firth and in its higher reaches it separates the Moffat hills on the east from the Lowther hills to the west. A 53 mile long-distance walking route called Annandale Way running through Annandale (from the source of the River Annan to the sea) was opened in September 2009.
