St. Paul's Indian Industrial School, Middlechurch, Manitoba, 1901

In the 20th century, the Canadian Indian residential school system was intended to assimilate the children of the Aboriginal peoples in Canada into European-Canadian society. The purpose of the schools, which separated children from their families, has also been described as cultural genocide or "killing the Indian in the child."
