The Chicago Police Department, also known as the CPD, is the principal law enforcement agency of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States, under the jurisdiction of the Mayor of Chicago. It is the second largest local law enforcement agency in the United States behind the New York City Police Department. It has about 12,244 sworn officers and over 1,925 other employees. Dating back to 1837, the Chicago Police Department is one of the oldest modern police forces in the world. The department has a long history of accusations of corruption and police brutality.
