Latvian (latviešu valoda) is the official state language of Latvia. It is also sometimes referred to as Lettish. There are about 1.39 million native Latvian speakers in Latvia and about 115 thousand abroad. About 1.9 million or 79% of Latvian population speak Latvian. Of those about 1,165,000 use it as primary language at home. The use of the Latvian language in various areas of social life in Latvia is increasing.
