The War on Drugs (December 14, 1914 – present) is a campaign of prohibition and foreign military aid and military intervention undertaken by the United States government, with the assistance of participating countries, and the stated aim to define and reduce the illegal drug trade. This initiative includes a set of drug policies of the United States that are intended to discourage the production, distribution, and consumption of illegal psychoactive drugs. In 1971, President Richard Nixon declared that "drug abuse is public enemy number one" in speaking to the people. In January 1972 Richard Nixon coined the term "War on Drug Abuse". The only time that Richard Nixon knowingly used the term "War on Drug" was at the end of a September 1972 trip report covering his trip to Laredo, Texas. By then the media had started to refer to the War on Drugs to more appropriately describe the strategies proposed by Mr. Nixon. (see American Presidency Project).
