A vortex is created by the passage of an aircraft wing, revealed by smoke. Vortices are one of the many phenomena associated with the study of aerodynamics. The vortex is created by the difference in pressure between the upper and lower surface of the wing. The high pressure air below the lower surface of the wing moves around the wingtip towards the lower-pressure region on the upper surface, creating the vortex.

Aerodynamics is a branch of dynamics concerned with studying the motion of air, particularly when it interacts with a solid object. Aerodynamics is a subfield of fluid dynamics and gas dynamics, with much theory shared between them. Aerodynamics is often used synonymously with gas dynamics, with the difference being that gas dynamics applies to all gases.
