Blue moon of August 31, 2012, viewed from Slobozia, Romania.

The Moon is rarely visually blue. The term blue moon is the name for the third full moon in a season that has four full moons, instead of the usual three. The second full moon in one calendar month is also sometimes called a blue moon. This usage results from a misinterpretation of the traditional definition of blue moon in the March 1946 issue of Sky and Telescope.
