The laboratory developed the Calutrons used at Y-12 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee to create enriched uranium for the first atomic bombs.

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory conducting unclassified scientific research. It is located on the grounds of the University of California, Berkeley, in the Berkeley Hills above the central campus. It is managed and operated by the University of California for the DOE. On January 23, 2012, the University announced that it plans to build a second campus of the Berkeley Lab on land that it owns at Richmond Field Station in nearby Richmond, CA.
