The building on 15th street, now Old Stuyvesant Campus

Stuyvesant High School , commonly referred to as Stuy , is one of the nine Specialized High Schools in New York City. These schools are operated by the New York City Department of Education and offer accelerated academics to city's residents free of tuition. Admission to Stuyvesant is based on the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT), a test administered to potential incoming freshmen typically in late October of eighth grade. The school was established as an academic and vocational school for boys in 1904, and became coeducational in 1969. Upon the construction of its building in Battery Park City in 1992, the facilities for girls became equal with those for boys.
