Kanji (; ) are the adopted logographic Chinese characters (hanzi) that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with hiragana (ひらがな, ), katakana (カタカナ, ), Hindu numerals, and the occasional use of the Latin alphabet. The Japanese term kanji () for the Chinese characters literally means "Han characters" and is the same written term in the Chinese language to refer to the character writing system hanzi ().
